If you’ve provided employees with benefits such as company vehicles, social events, or paid personal expenses, there’s a strong chance Fringe Benefits Tax may apply.

The FBT year runs from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026. If anything has been provided during this period — even occasionally — it is important to review it now.

Records You Need to Keep

Poor or incomplete record keeping is one of the biggest FBT risks. Without the right documentation, it can be difficult to support your position if reviewed.

Calculation of each benefit
Employee declarations
Invoices and receipts
Vehicle logbooks and travel records
Lease and asset documentation

These records must generally be kept for at least 5 years.

How to Get FBT Right

2. Work Out the Taxable Value

3. Keep the Right Records

Documentation is critical.

4. Lodge, Pay & Report
